Fight Off Fever with Simple, Honey-Based Recipes

Do you recall ever being in a state of shivering and uncontrollable sweating? At the same time, your head hurts, your muscles are sore, and you get a feeling that you might crumble and break at any given moment? That’s right, I’m talking about fever—a state of delirium accompanied by high body temperature. And we’re not talking about 37oC (98.6oF). Fever usually means abnormally high body temperature, like 39oC or 40oC (102oF or 104oF).

Fever is not an illness in and of itself. Fever is actually a symptom of some other condition, which in most cases is caused by infection. Aside from high body temperature, fever is accompanied by physical discomfort. Depending on the physical condition, age and the cause, you might not need medical treatment. In most cases, home remedies help; sometimes they are even more potent and effective than traditional medicine.

That being said, I would like to give you few home remedies for fever, all honey-based. These are extremely good for children, as we all know that children are reluctant to take their medicine. Symptoms of fever in children include poor appetite, sore throat, vomiting, ear pain, lethargy, fussiness, and cough.

Causes of Fever

Before we get to the home remedies, it’s important to understand what causes fever. Our body reacts to infection and illness by raising the body temperature. The two most common causes of fever are cold and gastroenteritis, but there are others, such as:

  • Ear, skin, throat, kidney, bladder, or lung infection
  • Any condition that causes inflammation
  • Vaccines
  • Side effects of drugs and medications
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Hormone disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism)

So let’s take a look at a few home remedies for fever. They help in most cases, unless the fever is caused by some serious and severe condition like cancer.

Lemon juice and honey are two of the most common ingredients used in home remedies. You can treat almost everything with these two. In this case, we get a bit more of a potent concoction with the addition of other ingredients.

  • 2 tablespoons of honey
  • ½ cup of chopped sage leaves
  • 4 cups of water
  • 3 tablespoons of lemon juice

How to make it

  1. Put the sage leaves, honey and lemon juice in a bowl.
  2. Pour the water over the ingredients, and then cover the bowl with a lid.
  3. Leave the ingredients in the bowl for one hour. Strain, and then store in a cold place.
  4. Drink half a glass three times per day.

Honey and Garlic

Honey is one of the most potent, healthy ingredients. With its antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties, honey is at the top of healthy foods. And then there is garlic, the king of home remedies.

  • 5 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

How to make it

  1. Chop the garlic cloves and mix them with lemon juice and honey.
  2. Consume in the morning on an empty stomach.

Honey for Prevention

If you want to prevent fever and the common cold, the best option is to eat 1 tablespoon of honey every day after every meal. This therapy can last from one to three months.

And before going to bed, mix the honey with some water and enjoy!
