A few days ago, UFC announced that UFC 228 would headline a title fight between welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and Darren Till.
This sudden news came as a shock to many UFC fans as it was expected that Woodley’s next title defence would come against interim titleholder Colby Covington. However, Covington turned down the matchup due to his recent surgery to correct a “nasal issue.”
He said he could return in November for UFC 230, but the MMA promotion couldn’t wait that long to book the champ vs champ fight between Woodley and Covington.
As a result, Covington didn’t only miss the chance at the title shot, but UFC also decided to strip him of his interim title at the beginning of the UFC 228 main event.
Before it all became official, Till called out Woodley on Twitter saying:
Colby out son, it’s me & you now. Accept the fight!!

Covington Faking Injury?
UFC’s decision to strip Covington of his interim belt that he just redeemed weeks ago, sparked a debate among fans. But Woodley says that everything that’s happening is Covington’s fault as he’s only faking an injury to avoid fighting him.
In an Instagram Live (transcript via mmafighting.com), Woodley shared his thoughts about the unexpected turn of events.
“They think they want some, but they don’t really want none,” the welterweight champ said. “Ain’t nobody scared of no ‘nerd-bashing.’ That motherf**ker acted like he has a sinus infection, he needed a Claritin. Boy, if you don’t get a Zyrtec in your mouth and come and get this action – because you’re gonna get it anyway if I don’t give it to you, you’ve got to get past somebody else that will.”
Woodley is Ready to Fight
“The Chosen One” (18-3-1) has successfully defended the welterweight title three times, and the upcoming bout will be his comeback after undergoing shoulder surgery in December. And now, he said “It’s been time to whoop some ass!” after an extended absence.
However, many fans doubt welterweight division contender and rising English star, Darren “The Gorilla” Till (17-0-1), as he missed weight by a couple of pounds at UFC Liverpool back in May. Despite that, he earned a huge victory over karate expert Stephen Thompson by unanimous decision, giving him a chance at the title shot.
Apparently, Woodley doesn’t care if Till misses weight again at UFC 228. He says he’s ready to face Till even if the undefeated young fighter can’t make championship weight.
“If Till misses weight we’re still gonna fight, it just won’t be a world title fight for him, and he’ll have to forfeit a percentage of his purse,” Woodley said.
“This is a big fight for him. It’s a world title opportunity, and my gut says he’s gonna rise to the occasion. Whatever problems he had in the past with making weight, I believe he’s gonna make it. It’s too big of an opportunity for him not to. [And if he doesn’t] I’m not gonna hold up the fight. One or two pounds ain’t gonna really change up the dynamic or outcome of the fight, so I’m gonna go into it confident and not worry about that.”

If Till can beat the Woodley, he will become only the second ever British fighter to become a UFC champion. Michael Bisping came first when he claimed the middleweight title in 2016.
UFC 228 will take place on September 8th, 2018 in Dallas, TX at the American Airlines Center.
