When you’re the boxing heavyweight champion of the world, things are bound to go down as people below you start to harass you for fights. Back when Wladimir Klitschko held the strap, way before the time of Anthony Joshua, he was getting hounded left, right and centre by guys for fights they didn’t deserve or weren’t ready for.
Note to any up and coming boxers out there: Don’t go disturbing the champ when he’s trying to eat his lunch in peace, okay?
One such man was Shannon Briggs, a twenty year veteran of the sport who was the two-time world heavyweight champion. Hardly a chump, “The Cannon” became well known for his unique style of trying to talk his way into fights, pursuing bouts by turning up in the everyday life of his opponent with a camera in hand to try and instigate an argument.
Briggs would later pursue a bout with Wladimir Klitschko, much to Klitschko’s amusement, when he ripped his shirt off at a press conference and tried to storm the stage before Klitschko took on Alex Leapai. Convinced that Klitschko was trying to avoid him, Briggs would then confront Klitschko at Mama Mia’s Italian restaurant where he would begin to yell at the champion before beginning to eat the food right off his plate!
“What’s up champ?” he screamed
“I told you champ, wherever you go I go, champ. What you do I do, champ. I train champ, you train champ. Let’s fight, champ.”
Briggs then grabs Klitschko’s food and begins to wolf it down.
“What you eat I eat,” he says, hungrily devouring the plate in front of him.
Pouring a glass of water, Klitschko looks incredibly calm, before dumping the glass all over Briggs’ head. Briggs responds and begins to scramble forward to attack the heavyweight champion while an onlooker tries to restrain him. Briggs would suffer a cut to his foot during the altercation as a result of broken glass on the ground.
Incensed, Briggs later showed up and filmed an altercation he had with Klitschko when he found the heavyweight champion out on the lake for a leisurely paddle board. Screaming at Klitschko that he wanted to fight him, Briggs would later end up knocking the champ off his paddle board with the wake of his boat, leaving him to struggle in the water as he left the scene.
While a bout between Briggs and Wladimir Klitschko never did eventuate, at least we have the hilarious attempts from Briggs to look back on.
