Basketbrawl is becoming prevalent nowadays.
Or maybe some players, sometimes even referees, cannot just keep their cool heads.
Days after the Phillippine and Australia basketball teams engaged in a crazy scuffle, another ugly brawl erupted in a basketball match this time at AAU in Atlanta, Georgia.
Last Sunday, what was expected as a decent basketball match turned out to be a violent melee between the referees and some players from a team at the AAU basketball tourney.
It became the subject of conversation in social media as the video quickly went viral, receiving mixed reactions from the netizens.
A Scuffle Erupts between Players and Referees of AAU
The head coach of the team involved recalled the story in an interview with ESPN.
Howard Martin claimed that a technical foul and an ejection called on his player in the fourth quarter sparked the violent brawl. He said that his player did not like the call so he made a comment, which did not sit well with the officials.
“So the other team inbounded the ball, walked it up, the ref said to my player, ‘Say it again.’ Then he T’d him up and kicked him out of the game. And he walked behind him, still having words.”
“Then the ref pushed my player, and they squared up right by my bench. When they squared up, another one of my players jumped off the bench and took [the referee] down. We separated them.”
But the coach of the Houston Raptors said it was the player from the R.A.W who attacked the referee first.
Bobby Benjamin, the mentor of the Raptors, claimed:
“The referee definitely didn’t attack the kids. Absolutely not.”
“Once things got going, and he was attacked . . . he got assaulted. They were too outnumbered to even try to defend themselves.”
As seen in the video below, the referees were clearly outnumbered but they tried to counter the attacks from the young guys. One referee tried to pacify the situation but it was too uncontrollable.
The organizers have expressed their disapproval with the violent scuffle. They even described it as ‘sickening and hard to stomach.’ But they assure that necessary punishment will be given to those responsible for the brawl.
