UFC Officially Releases Colour Commentator Jimmy Smith

The UFC is bringing in a lot of surprises for the new year, and it seems like promoting its next fights without Jimmy Smith is one of them.

Colour commentator Jimmy Smith worked at several UFC events in 2018 after moving in from working for Bellator for six years. However, his most recent tweet of not pushing through the year with the prestigious MMA promotion is sad news for some fans.

‘I’m Afraid to Announce’

The mixed martial arts analyst is also a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and has a 5-1 MMA record. No doubt why he does his announcing at UFC events so well and colourful.

In fact, UFC’s veteran commentator Joe Rogan slammed Bellator for letting go of Smith in 2017, saying it’s a huge error on their part. In one of his podcasts, Rogan said:

“You (expletive) up, Bellator. I’ve been telling everybody Jimmy Smith’s the best out there, and you let him go. That’s a huge error on their part. I would be thrilled if somehow or another they were able to work it out where Jimmy Smith was at the UFC.”

However, it seems like the UFC is doing the same this year. Taking it to Twitter, the native of Pensylvania revealed one of the biggest updates on his career.

“Now that the New Year has arrived I’m afraid I have to announce that the UFC has declined to re-sign me and my time with the promotion has come to an end. I just want to thank everyone at the promotion who made me feel welcome and appreciate at every single show.”

Adios Amigos

After announcing the sad news about UFC’s refusal to sign him up again this year, Smith explained his respect for every fighter in the sport while working for the promotion. He also thanked everyone in the UFC who made him feel at home.

“I tried my utmost to show the fighters the respect they deserved for giving their lives to this sport and hope they felt that when they heard what I had to say. The UFC fans were truly amazing and I wish I could thank each and every one of you for your support.”

“Even your criticism because it made me strive to be better. Wishing everyone a great 2019 and on to the next fight… Adios Amigos.”

This Is Goodbye For Now

MMA fans have varied reactions on the revelation, but there are a lot of them who thinks the UFC made a wrong decision. Twitter user Caposa commends Smith for his performance in MMA fights.

He wrote, “Makes no sense. I honestly have no idea what the UFC is looking for in a colour commentator/analyst at this point. You will land on your feet somewhere quickly, I’m sure. Best of luck.”

User Kreamma also said UFC can somehow decide illogical, saying, “Underutilized, underappreciated… You’re one of the best. I’m sure you’ll find a new gig soon!”

Here’s a longer version of Smith’s farewell post on Instagram:

Well, it’s the same pic I used last year at this time so I figure it’s appropriate. I’m afraid I have to report that the UFC has decided not to re-sign me and my time with the promotion has come to an end. It was really an amazing year and first of all I want to thank all of the people at the UFC who really went out of their way to make me feel welcome. The producers, the support staff, and the audio crew (I’m thinking of you Pockets) were all fantastic made me feel right at home. Of course @jon_anik @joerogan @kbheat @sugarashadevans @meganolivi @brendanfitztagram @laura_sanko @kennyflorian and everyone else I shared the stage with were fantastic and generous and it was a pleasure working with all of you. To the UFC fighters who give everything they have to this sport: I want you to know I did everything I could to honor and respect you every time I was privileged to watch you work. Your sacrifice is what makes this sport amazing to behold. I am humbled by your skills and courage every time. Most of all I want to thank the UFC’s incredible fans. You made me feel welcome from the start and I was proud to have the opportunity to entertain you for at least a little while. Hearing a rabid Australian shout “WELCOME TO THE UFC JIMMY!!” at my first event in Perth is an experience I will remember for a long time. Whenever I finished a show and we congratulated each other behind the scenes I always thought “Only matters if the fans liked it.” You are an amazing group and no matter what I did you were always foremost on my mind. The new year always brings change. I have no idea what is coming next but 2018 was an amazing ride and hopefully there is more to come. As a great band once said…Adios Amigos
