A lot has been happening on UFC lately, and the recent announcement that Tyron Woodley will defend his title against Darren Till instead of Colby Covington has gained mixed reactions from UFC fans.
Covington earned his interim title after beating Rafael dos Anjos by unanimous decision at UFC 225, giving him the chance to fight reigning UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley.
But after undergoing surgery to correct a “nasal issue”, Covington said he couldn’t make it on September 8 and targets to return in November for UFC 230. However, UFC couldn’t wait that long to book the champion vs champion fight, so they moved on and decided to find a replacement.
For some reason, Till got the controversial title shot despite missing 3 pounds in his last win against Stephen Thompson.
Covington didn’t just miss the chance at his title shot, but he will also be stripped of his interim title once Woodley (18-3-1 MMA, 8-2-1 UFC) and Till (17-0-1 MMA, 5-0-1 UFC) enters the Octagon at UFC 228.
Tyron Woodley vs. Darren Till for welterweight title will headline UFC 228 on Sept. 8 in Dallas, per Dana White. Colby Covington has not been stripped of interim title yet, but he will be the moment Woodley vs. Till begins. Similar situation to UFC 223. https://t.co/Qw6ygV6DsV

Twitter Reactions to Covington Getting Stripped
Check out the mixed reactions on Twitter when people heard about Covington getting stripped of his interim title:
You don't have to like Colby Covington to get frustrated over an interim title being introduced 6 weeks ago only to strip him of the belt because there was no plan in place for a main event at UFC 228 in September. It's ridiculous.

I'm sure the UFC will clarify the situation. But my understanding is interim titles expire if they're not renewed. Colby didn't get his paperwork done in time. So his title expires and it's to the back of the line for him. Rules are rules. *This is sarcasm for the humour impaired https://t.co/XmDNjgJXhL

September 8 needed a 2nd title fight.
Heavy and light heavy won't work
185 won't work
155 won't work
145 won't work
135 unlikely given UFC 227
Ditto for 125
Women's 145 won't work (with Nunes).
Ditto for 135
170 can, but only if newly-crowned interim champ stripped.

Covington vs Usman?
Meanwhile, Kamaru Usman gave out hints that he wants to fight Covington when he returns. In a report from Ariel Helwani, he confirmed that Usman’s team are pushing for the bout to happen soon.
With Colby Covington getting passed up, Kamaru Usman wants to fight Covington next. According to Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz that’s the fight they are pushing for now. “We feel for Colby,” Abdelaziz said, “but he is the guy we need to fight. He is the true No. 1 contender.”
