This video is an oldie but a goodie and just goes to show that technique beats raw power any day of the week…
On the face of it, this is a mismatch to rival some of the freak fights that featured in the early days of MMA: Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, the Icelandic strongman and former Europe’s Strongest Man, best known for his character “The Mountain” from Game of Thrones, challenges a man four inches shorter and 200 pounds lighter than him to an arm wrestling competition.
The problem is, the man that Björnsson challenges, Devon Larratt, is a two-time world arm-wrestling champion who has been competing for over 20 years and knows the sport inside and out.
The footage below is one of those bizarre moments in life where, if you don’t know anything about the sport you are watching, you would not believe the scene you are witnessing.
Every instinct you have suggests that there is no conceivable way anyone could easily beat Thor “The Mountain” Bjornsson in an arm-wrestling match.
Out to smash all of your preconceived notions is Larratt, who took on Bjornsson one arm at a time, calming instructing one of the strongest men to ever walk the Earth on proper arm-wrestling technique.
The Canadian is an incredible specimen; in 2013, Larratt had surgery on his right arm and elbow, forcing him to compete left-handed only. Now he holds the title as the Left and Right-Arm World Armwrestling League (WAL) Heavyweight Champion and Left Arm Arm Wars Super-Heavyweight Champion!
Larratt proves that arm wrestling isn’t just about pure strength; he has no trouble at all keeping the mountainous Björnsson on the ropes for the entire match before finishing him with ease. Just don’t let him get anywhere near your head, Devon!
