Deserves a Rematch

Every MMA fan is shocked at the announcement of Daniel Cormier vs Derrick Lewis headlining UFC 230 in November. However, it is more surprising to know that Stipe Miocic did reach out to the promotion for a rematch with DC for the same event, but didn’t get an offer back.

The former UFC heavyweight champ is hailed as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of the promotion. Miocic (18-3), was the longest reigning titleholder in the history of the division.

However, two-division champion Cormier (21-1) broke Miocic’s winning streak after defeating him via first-round knockout at UFC 226 in July. If anybody deserves a rematch according to many, it is the legendary American fighter.

According to Miocic on an ESPN report, he spoke to UFC about stepping in to bolster at UFC 230 on Nov. 3 in Madison Square Garden, New York. However, he was never offered a rematch against DC.

Ever since losing the UFC 226 heavyweight title match against the champ-champ, Miocic has been calling out for a rematch. He humbly accepted the defeat saying ‘it wasn’t his night’ while expressing his desire for an immediate rematch.

Via text message to ESPN Miocic said:

“I was in talks to offer myself up to headline and help save that card, but I was never offered [Cormier].”

“I’d fight [Cormier] any time, anywhere. I look forward to getting my belt back.”

We knew it would take a while before DC re-enters the Octagon and it was thought the champion would fight Miocic possibly after Brock Lesnar early next year.

However, it clearly disappointed the former heavyweight star when UFC announced on Tuesday that Cormier would defend his title against Lewis just after “The Beast” won his UFC 229 bout against Alexander Volkov last weekend.

Looking for a High-Profile Matchup

Fans are expecting UFC 230 to be one of the promotion’s biggest cards this year. But after initially launching its fight card, fans were disappointed to know that a women’s flyweight between Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanksbout is about to headline the NYC event.

However, the new main card seems to disappoint fans more, saying Miocic should be on Lewis’ spot. The American pride did not elaborate his talks with UFC about Nov. 3 and the promotion have not responded yet.

Here’s a video highlight of DC vs Stipe at UFC 226 back in July:

Here’s Miocic stressing why he deserves a rematch during an interview with ESPN in July:

“I cleaned out the division. I defended it more than anyone, and you’re gonna tell me I don’t deserve a chance to get it back? Get out of here. Kiss my ass if you don’t think I deserve that.”
