Terrible news has just come out of Hawaii… UFC flyweight Rachael Ostovich was attacked and hospitalized in Honolulu ahead of her fight vs Paige VanZant in January.
According to a Sunday report from TMZ Sports, The Ultimate Fighter contestant is believed to have suffered a broken orbital bone after an alleged attack by “someone close to her.” However, it wasn’t specified when the assault that has her hospitalised happened.
The 27-year-old flyweight is set to take on VanZant at UFC Brooklyn on January 18 for the UFC’s ESPN+ debut. Though Ostovich’s team has not yet said a word on the report, these uncalled-for injuries will likely hold her off the fight.
Currently, the female contender holds a professional record of 4-4 and is one of Invicta FC’s standout prospects at 125-pounds before accepting an MMA pursuit at TUF 26. This season’s fight will crown the inaugural UFC champion of the division.
Despite absorbing a defeat from former first-ranked flyweight Barb Honchak, Ostovich was a bright spot among many potentials. In her UFC debut at the finale of TUF 26 in December 2017, the Hawaiian pride tapped out Karine Gevorgyan with a first-round armbar.
Ostovich then appeared in July at the TUF 27 Finale, taking on another fellow castmate from her season in Montana De La Rosa. After two rounds of competitive exchanges, the Honolulu native submitted to her opponent via a third-round rear-naked-choke.
In a recent Instagram post, the mother of one expressed excitement on her upcoming Octagon dance against Vanzant at Barclay’s Center in New York.
“I am so excited for this one. Tickets Go on Sale Nov. 30th! Thank you all for the love and support.”
Ostovich is Vanzant’s comeback fight after completing her recovery from a broken right arm obtained in her unanimous-decision loss to Jessica-Rose Clark at UFC Fight Night 124. If pursued, Vanzant will be the biggest opponent on the rising star’s UFC career.
However, if the 27-year-old did, in fact, suffer a broken bone in her face, Ostovich will see her most crucial battle vanish or suffer a delay. Nevertheless, the report is yet to be verified.
