Versatility is not new in the world of sports. Thousands of athletes can play and excel in multiple sports. But shifting from lifting to combat sports could be very challenging.
In Australia, a well-known powerlifter named Alex Simon is leaving his sport to pursue a career in mixed martial arts. Can he transition from a powerful lifter to a disciplined fighter?
Although strength and power is a significant advantage in combat sports, he would need to train and improve other aspects such as endurance, style, and strategy.
Simon is no ordinary athlete. In fact, he had a successful career in powerlifting. At the age of 24, the young powerlifter has won various competitions in Australia including the strongest man accolade.
Watch one of his fights in this clip:
After lording over major powerlifting competitions in Australia, he is dubbed as “The God” for his omnipotence. With his massive success in his previous career, he is setting high expectations for himself as he tries his might inside the octagon.
But the success in powerlifting doesn’t automatically guarantee success in mixed martial arts. In fact, he has to overcome a tall order to become a dangerous fighter.
If he desires to become the next UFC star, Simon has to undergo massive cut weight. He weighs 380 pounds, which does not fall to any category or weight class in the league. The closer he could get is in the heavyweight division, which sets a 265-lb limit.
He might also face enormous challenges from the anti-doping organisation. Thus, transitioning to MMA would be a big task for Simon.
Eager to Build a Name
In a social media post, Simon revealed the story behind this move. And now that he has signed a contract with a company, he sets his sights to becoming the next UFC heavyweight champion.
“[SIGNING ON WITH TEAM BODYFIT AT MIRANDA] HAS GIVEN ME A OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE MY DREAM SINCE I WAS A YOUNG KID AND THAT IS WHAT I WILL BE DOING NOW OUT OF THIS AMAZING FACILITY AND THAT DREAM IS TO BECOME UFC WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION.”
With a goal this high, Simon is aware that he needs to put extra work to become the next big thing in MMA.
“I WILL NOW BE PUTTING ALL OF MY TIME AND FOCUS INTO BECOMING THE BEST MMA FIGHTER I CAN BE AND COULDN’T ASK FOR A BETTER PLACE FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. TODAY IS MY 25TH BIRTHDAY AND I HAVE A GOAL WHICH I WILL BE WORKING TOWARDS EVERY SINGLE DAY OF BECOMING HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD BEFORE MY 30TH B-DAY IN 5 YEARS TIME. I HAVE THE PERFECT TEAM BEHIND ME NOW TO GET ME TO THE TOP OF THE FIGHT GAME AND I AM EXTREMELY MOTIVATED TO BE CHAMPION, MASSIVE THANKS TO MY TEAM WHO BELIEVE IN ME AND MY GOAL. LET’S DO THIS.”
Simon has started to hit the gym for strength and fighting training. In the video below, watch how he works his ass to become the next UFC star. He has also engaged in some amateur fights, which he won via nasty knockouts.
Nothing is impossible in the world of sports.
Simon just needs to continue working hard, and the results will never disappoint him.
