Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel Peters Launches Her New Advocacy
The grand winner of the 2017 edition of the Miss Universe pageant, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters has been seen working with some of the famous UFC fighters. Does this means she will see actions inside the octagon?
She is not trading her Miss Universe crown for a belt in mixed martial arts. The South African beauty formed a partnership with UFC for her self-defense advocacy called Unbreakable.
The advocacy stemmed from her traumatic kidnapping experience days following her victory in the Miss South Africa last year.
“It was extremely traumatic, and that is exactly how ‘Unbreakable’ was born.”
She was kidnapped and was held at a gunpoint. Luckily, her skills in self-defense helped her escape the unfortunate event.
It then became her advocacy in the Miss Universe pageant, en route to winning the elusive title. A year after winning the crown, Peters wants to continue raising awareness on the importance of self-defense.
“I knew how the skills and knowledge that I was taught prior to that incident saved my life and helped me to get away from an unwanted situation.”
“It helped me to stay safe and to get out of that situation, and that is why I am so passionate about empowering women and people with skills and knowledge on how to prevent violent situations from happening.”
Demi-Leigh Nel Peters and UFC Fighters Teamed Up
Prior to this advocacy, Peters has tapped the service of UFC fighters to help her learn some techniques in fighting and self-defense. A seminar was held at The Center in Las Vegas, with UFC stars Kamaru Usman and Gina Mazany calling the shots.
Usman told MMAJunkie in an interview:
“It is about creating a window of opportunity for you to defend yourself.”
“It feels good to be able to come to a community, see people, see how people receive some of these things and this information. It’s amazing.”
Meanwhile, Mazany shared how helping other people meant everything to her.
“I love my sport. I love what I do. But what I love nothing more is to spread and share the love and help people. If I can show someone, something, or tell him something that will make him feel just down much safer, that means everything to me.”
