Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao Rematch Looking Even More Likely

Eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao will need to win over his challenger, Adrien Broner, on Saturday night if he wants to set another date with Floyd Mayweather for a rematch.

Reports claimed that a return fight between the Filipino champ and the undefeated boxing great would likely be announced this weekend, depending on the outcome of Pacquiao’s first defense of his WBA welterweight belt.

Manny Pacquiao will march into his first title-defense against American behemoth Adrien Boner this Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Pacman” captured the WBA welterweight championship from Lucas Matthyse in their showdown last July 2018 billed as Fight of the Champions. Proving all his doubters wrong, the 40-year old legend knocked down his younger opponent thrice en route to a fifth-round TKO victory, which led to the Saturday fight opposite “The Problem.”

According to multiple reports, one of Pacquiao’s biggest rivals, Floyd Mayweather Jr., will be in attendance this weekend to witness the fight at ringside, fueling talks of a rematch between the two boxing greats.

Pacquiao and Mayweather tussled in a blockbuster fight three years ago – the most lucrative fight in combat sports history, selling over $400 million in tickets and pay-per-view buys – with “Money” coasting to a unanimous decision win after 12 rounds.

In November last year, the Filipino senator claimed that a rematch with Floyd is “a big possibility” as the undefeated American is all set to come out of retirement.

“There is a big possibility because Floyd is coming back into boxing. He is fighting in December and I am fighting in January. So a big possibility after that next year that we will discuss a re-match.”

“My thinking is to have a re-match and to make a clear decision on who will win the fight because in the last fight that we had it wasn’t clear who won the fight because he didn’t throw a lot of punches and he won the fight. I had a shoulder injury…but this time, if this re-match happens there are no excuses, no alibis.”

Since losing to Mayweather, Pacquiao has won three of his next four fights, dispatching Timothy Bradley Jr. and Jessie Vargas before cruising to a questionable defeat to Jeff Horn.

The former eight-division champion then bounced back strong after coming out with a masterful performance against Matthyse last year to win the welterweight belt. He was rumoured to fight Amir Khan or Mayweather following this victory but it was announced on November that his next assignment will be the 29-year old Broner.

Meanwhile, Mayweather has starred in a pair of money fights since his first encounter with Pacquiao.

The undefeated boxer took home a disclosed $100 million paycheck from his clash with UFC star Conor McGregor. Recently, he came out of retirement and faced kickboxing sensation Tenshin Nasukawa in an exhibition fight in Japan, where he reportedly earned $9 million.

If the stars aligned on Saturday night and Pacquiao defends his belt successfully, he may have another shot at Mayweather and have some payback time.
