Conor McGregor’s striking coach made his early and brutal prediction for the highly-anticipated lightweight title fight between the Notorious and reigning champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
McGregor and Nurmagomedov will star in what could be the biggest fight in the history of Ultimate Fighting Championship this October 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Conor’s striking coach Owen Roddy has predicted that the Notorious’ striking power will dictate the outcome of the match.
Both camps have been hyping their respective fighters recently. And in his latest appearance in the Ariel Helwani MMA Show, Roddy gave his early prediction on the Khabib-Conor fight. He said that the Russian champ would not survive the Irish star’s striking power and will get finish either in the first or second round.
“Conor lands on the chin and puts him to sleep. I always give his opponent the benefit of the doubt because some people are tough and can take more shots than others, but it’s only a matter of time. If Conor lands in the first, really, it could be done in the first. Once he lands on the chin, you’ll all see it in Khabib’s face. Once he lands, it will be lights out either immediately or shortly after.”
The striking coach echoed the same sentiment of his SBG teammate John Kavanagh. He stressed:
“I’m expecting a KO. Most definitely. Whether it’s in the first or the second, I don’t know. But, I would predict that he’s going to flatten him… I definitely think Conor’s going to land quick enough. It’s just how he deals with being here and how he copes. I’ve seen it many times before. Not many people can take the shots. Very, very few. I don’t think Khabib can take them either.”
McGregor’s last professional fight was his boxing bout against Floyd Mayweather last year. Meanwhile, he last starred in an MMA fight two years ago, when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the second round of UFC 205.
With two years of fighting hiatus, many fans have speculated that Conor’s level of game has taken a step backwards. But Roddy was quick to point out that the former two-division champion is in good shape ahead of the fight.
“He’s in good shape. He’s always training and always improving. He never stops training. The Conor McGregor you’re going to see on October 6 is definitely going to be twice the fighter he was in previous fights. Most definitely.”
He also revealed that their team has started devising a game plan against the Eagle.
“He’s in good nick, and at the moment now we’re just starting to tailor a game plan and put a game plan specific to Khabib together. Now it’s time to really fine-tune the game plan, and fine-tune what we expect from Khabib and create some solutions.”
