After some chopping and changing, the main event for UFC St. Petersburg was finally set. Alistair Overeem faced off against Aleksei Oleinik.
Originally we were meant to see Alexander Volkov, the former Bellator Champion fight Overeem. However, Volkov pulled out due to health issues.
The UFC took their second trip to Russia this weekend, the first back in September of 2018 featured Oleinik in the main event too. He beat Mark Hunt via submission, extending his winning streak to 2.
When Volkov pulled out Oleinik jumped on the opportunity to move up the heavyweight rankings. The card featured loads of home country fighters, trying to capitalise on their moment in the spotlight.
Overeem coming into the fight with a dominant win in his last performance, however, before that Overeem took a nasty KO loss from Curtis Blaydes. Overeem is a well-renowned kickboxer and fought in the K-1 Grand Prix.
Knocking out huge names including Badr Hari. Overeem’s striking his some of the best in the Heavyweight division.
After a takedown filled fight in the Co-Main event. It was time for the Main Event. In the first round, Oleinik landed a pretty big shot which appeared to stun Overeem.
However, it was Overeem’s kickboxing that came into play when he was in the clinch as he landed a series of huge knees. Oleinik had Overeem against the cage for a large portion of the round landing hammer fists and large shots.
However, it was Overeem who got it done in the first round with under a minute to spare.
Landing a couple of huge knees that dropped Oleinik then it was the follow-up strikes that caused Marc Goddard to call off the contest.

Overeem is now on a 2 fight win streak, maybe its time to try and make the Volkov fight happen now? If not Volkov then who’s next for The Demolition Man?
