Megan Anderson Wins Fight By Toe Poke To The Eyeball At UFC 232

Megan Anderson showed Cat Zingano how well she can take advantage of distance after stopping her via a high kick to the eye at the 1:01 mark of the opening round at UFC 232 in California.

Anderson and Zingano squared off on Saturday night’s preliminary card for an impressive featherweight match at The Forum in Inglewood. The 28-year-old fighter put the FS1-aired bout to a stop after slicing into her opponent’s eye ahead of the Jones-Gustafsson rematch.

Zingano (10-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC) planned on avoiding her opponent’s long limbs by maintaining distance during the featherweight showdown. However, the losing fighter failed to escape one exchange that led to a high kick from Anderson who’s proven her skill at a distance.

The Australian mixed martial artist landed a high kick that winced her opponent at the first minute, making Zingano seek refuge at the fence. Referee Marc Goddard couldn’t do any more than tell the American fighter to continue since it was a legal blow.

When Zingano refused to fight after suffering the strike, Anderson went in for follow up punches that brought the match into a swift stoppage. It was a much-needed volte-face for the native of Queensland who was in line for a shot at then-featherweight champ Cris Cyborg.

At the post-fight presscon, the winning female featherweight explained how she took care of the match as well as her opponent.

“I kind of gave Cat some space because of the way she reacted. I waited a little bit, but the fight was still on. She wasn’t defending or anything, so they just stopped it. I know this stoppage was a little strange, and if people think I need to prove my position in the top of this division I’m happy to give Cat a rematch. If not, I’m ready to get tonight’s co-main event winner.”
