For Khabib, There’s a Perfect Timing for Everything
The UFC Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, revealed his reason why he was not interested in a confrontation with Conor McGregor in the 2018 World Cup Finale.
Both UFC stars graced the Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday to witness the conclusion of the quadrennial event, which featured the match between France and Croatia.
Fans hoped that the MMA rivals would cross path in the event but that didn’t happen.
But for Khabib, this was just how he wanted things to turn out.
As long as there is no official deal about their fight, he would prefer not to have a direct interaction with The Notorious
“I thought I’d meet McGregor at the Luzhniki Stadium. But even if we meet now, we still will not be able to find out who is stronger. If there was a cage in the middle of the arena, it would be more interesting. And now something to find out on the street and so on. We are not at that age and not in that position.”
A Waste of Time
He remained firm about his desire on meeting Conor in the cage instead of a petty confrontation in a football match.
“It would be ideal if there were no one around. Or vice versa — to the full stadium, in the middle of the cage, and in it — we. In general, I see no reason to approach him now. We are hospitable people. Let the football look, enjoy Russia.”
Conor McGregor vacated his lightweight title after being on a hiatus for almost two years.
The belt was then won by Nurmagomedov in April at the UFC 226.
On the same month, McGregor instigated the infamous backstage brawl in Brooklyn where he attacked the bus filled with MMA fighters including Khabib. According to rumours, it was Conor’s beef with Khabib that sparked the controversial scuffle.
Since then, MMA fans have been clamouring for a Khabib-Conor showdown in the UFC.
But with Conor’s return still unclear, Khabib has expressed his intentions to take on another fighter.
“If not Conor, if not (Georges St-Pierre), I think the winner of Eddie Alvarez versus Dustin Poirier.”
”The winner deserves a title shot. About Tony Ferguson, I don’t know. He has surgery but if he can [fight], why not? Tony Ferguson is the biggest matchup for me. It is the match I want.”
