Kelvin Gastelum Explains Strange Skin Condition Before UFC 234

Just hours before the UFC 234 main event took place, Kevin Gastelum saw his title shot vanish with middleweight champ Robert Whittaker pulling out of the contest due to a hernia. However, the title contender apparently has medical concerns of his own.

Days before the promotion’s first pay-per-view offering of the year, fans worried about the UFC 234 main event being in jeopardy after noticing cold sores on Gastelum’s face. Despite this, the ‘Soldier of God’ says it wasn’t supposed to be a concern until the match was called off.

Cold Sores

In an interview, the fourth-ranked middleweight fighter is playing it cool despite not getting the title shot he worked hard for. Aside from this, Gastelum clarified the skin condition he’s been noticed to have; saying they were all over his body in fact.

“It started this week, stuff on my nose, stuff on my neck, stuff on my face and stuff kind of all over my body… But I wasn’t going to let that stop me from fighting,” Gastelum told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

“It definitely was a concern, dealing with the commission and everything, but I had the doctors give me antibiotics, give me treatment for whatever is on my face. It was getting better and they have no issues with it as long as it’s getting better and it was,” Gastelum stated when asked how he’ll deal with the fighting commission for having a medical concern.

When asked about his cancelled fight, the American fighter is positive about getting another chance at Whittaker. However, it is the middleweight champ who will allegedly have a ‘crack at Gastelum’s title’ this time.

“It just depends on how Rob can turn around and make a quick recovery. Obviously, I wish him a speedy recovery, I wish him all the best. I have a lot of respect for him, but once he recovers and he was up, then I’ll give him a crack at my title. Maybe we can do it in Vegas or we can do it in LA.”

With Much Sorrow

Gastelum simultaneously outhit Michael Bisping and Ronaldo Souza on his last two fights. Yesterday, the 27-year-old took to Twitter his humble acceptance of the called off match; apologising to everyone whose anticipation was disappointed.

“With much sorrow, I write that my fight for the middleweight title is off. I’m sorry to everyone that was expecting this great fight, Family, friends and followers from around the world,” he wrote.

“God has a reason for doing things and I firmly believe his plans are much bigger and better than I can even imagine. I’m so torn about this situation. A lifetime of pursuit to be able to reach this level and I hope none of these efforts will go in vain.”

“I wish @robwhittakermma a speedy recovery champ! Get well soon!”
