Jon Jones Willing To Fight DC In Trilogy Bout To ‘Give Fans What They Want’

Reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has changed his tune about fighting his old rival, Daniel Cormier, for the third time.

In previous interviews, Jones said the trilogy fight is unlikely to happen because of the slim chances DC is moving to light heavyweight.

Saying he is a realist, the pound-for-pound king made it clear that Cormier has to move down to 205 pounds if he wants to pursue the fight.

Jones prevailed in their two meetings, winning the first one by way of a unanimous decision before knocking out Cormier in the second instalment to their rivalry.

But the win was overturned to a no-contest after Jones was flagged for an anti-doping violation issue.

While some fans were already convinced that Jones is the better fighter, there is still strong clamour for a third fight.

The light heavyweight kingpin does not understand why fans are calling for a trilogy fight, but if that is what they want, Jones said he is willing to give it a go.

Enjoying His Time

Jones reclaimed the light heavyweight championship last December when he destroyed Alexander Gustafsson in their rematch at UFC 232.

He then easily defended his belt against Anthony Smith at UFC 235, with some pundits saying there are no more competitions left for Jones at 205 pounds.

But Jones, himself, declared that there are still plenty of good matchups waiting for him at light heavyweight.

“There’s a lot of big fights that people want to see me have in the light heavyweight division, so there’s really no need for me to go to heavyweight,” Jones told ESPN (transcript from MMA Mania).

“I’m doing well where I’m at, I’m making weight really easily. And I feel like when the UFC approaches me about a fight they feel will be a ‘mega-fight,’ and they come with the numbers that would make sense for me to do that, I’ll totally do it.”

Mega Fight

The 31-year old legend said the UFC needs to break the bank to convince to move up at 265 pounds.

“It’s gonna take that checkbook for me to bounce up to heavyweight.”

Asked about a potential clash with the reigning heavyweight champ, Jones said he would be willing to make the fans happy though he is not sure why there is still interest for a third fight.

“There’s still a lot of interest in me fighting Daniel Cormier for some reason. I don’t really know what it is.”

“The first time I won by unanimous decision and the second time I won by knockout, so I don’t know why people want to see us fight again so bad.”

“But, at heavyweight I guess that would add a few different factors.”

“So yeah, if that’s the fight the world wants to see, I know one thing about the UFC, we give the fans what they want.”
