Joe Rogan is in the spotlight for his film appearances, stand up comedy and UFC commentaries, though not too many people know his martial arts background in the past.
If you have ever wondered why the American commentator knows combat sports well, one thing is because he’s no stranger to intensive fight training. Rogan has been a black belter both in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Taekwondo.
In fact, he nearly squared off against the most unlikely opponent inside the Octagon. Once upon a time, a UFC match between Rogan and Blade actor Wesley Snipes almost came about.
See What Happens
The American star’s team approached the largest MMA promotion to pitch a one-time fight between him and actor Jean Claude Van Damme. When UFC turned thumbs down to the matchup, they brought forward another rival, Joe Rogan.
On a recent podcast from the native of New Jersey, he explained why the JCVD pitch was denied.
“He’s like ‘nobody’s gonna pay to see you and Jean-Claude Van Damme fight. You have to fight someone who was ‘current.’ So he said ‘would you fight Joe Rogan?”
“And he said ‘Yup, let’s do it.’ So they came to me, and I went ‘How much money?’ And then they started talking, then I said ‘OK, let’s see what happens.”

Sometimes I read comments that say, “wait… does he REALLY wear a fanny pack?” Fuck yes I do. They’re convenient, and they look stupid, which makes me feel good. I think we could all do a lot better if we concentrated more on convenience and genuinely not giving a fuck, and less on looking good. Plus, I sell them. They’re available along with the Freak Party Worldwide shirt at my higherprimate.com website.
Sadly, the projected square off didn’t materialise, but Rogan believes it’ll be a disaster for his opponent if it did. Given his experience in martial arts back then, the MMA commentator said he’s just too much for someone like Snipes.
“I just didn’t think that anybody who didn’t know any jiu-jitsu could learn it quick. I was already a brown belt by then, and I just knew what happened when a brown belt fights a white belt. I just can’t imagine.”
“I know how to stand up, and even if I wasn’t good at striking anymore like I was when I was a kid, I’m good enough to know what to not do and where to not be. And if I get a hold of someone who doesn’t know jiu-jitsu, I’m pretty sure I’m choking the f— out of them.”
“He’s never wrestled, he never had a competitive martial arts match, whether it’s a kickboxing fight or karate fight. I was like ‘I’m gonna choke the f— out of this guy. I’m gonna get a hold of him, and I’m gonna squeeze the s— out of him, and they’re gonna give me a lot of money, and he’s probably not even gonna get hurt.’ That’s what I thought.”
