Joe Rogan Reveals UFC Are Working On Secret New Glove Design

Eye pokes are a common violation in UFC fights that famed commentator Joe Rogan wanted to end for long with a simple change: gloves.

It took years before the American analyst was able to sway the world’s largest MMA promotion into acquiring a new design of fighters’ gloves that would protect corneas inside the cage. According to his recent hint, the UFC is apparently working on this innovation.

Open-Handed Gloves

Rogan has been with the UFC for nearly a decade until he acknowledged the need for the sports company to launch a new glove design to rid fighters from eye pokes. After Strikeforce contender poked his opponent bad, the stand-up comedian tipped off on  The Underground in 2011:

“There’s always going to be a problem with open-handed gloves, but I was wondering if there was a solution where we could develop a glove that covered the tips of the fingers and kept them all together like a speed bag glove.”

“We would still have to worry about the thumb, but I think it could prevent at least some of the eye pokes from open hand pushes. What I was thinking was a thin leather cover for the 4 fingers with some elastic on the sides so that it could spread out a bit to adjust grip.”

Better Glove Design

Nearly after another decade, it sounds like the UFC is finally taking his advice into consideration, with Rogan revealing on his most recent Fight Companion for UFC Beijing that a new design is currently on board.

Co-hosting with Rogan, former MMA fighter Brendan Schaub raised the subject of eye pokes and how Neil Magny blamed his poor performance against Santiago Ponzinibbio partially on this violation.

”That’s a real problem man, and there is a solution in the works,” Joe said. “I can’t talk about it, I’m sworn to secrecy.”

“Goggles!” Schaub suggested, which is probably a dumb idea unless you’re a swimmer. Joe couldn’t help but put a card on the table:

“They have a better glove design that they’re working on right now. That someone is working on. I can’t say anything. I’ve already said too much.”
