At the moment, Israel Adesanya is one of the UFC’s most promising young fighters. He’s trying to keep up with the hype after airing his desire to enter the Octagon opposite to light heavyweight champ Jon Jones in the future.
‘The Last Stylebender’ is currently on his way to an interim title shot against Kelvin Gastelum on April 13. The middleweight battle is taking place at the co-main event of UFC 236 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Adesanya is coming off a historic unanimous decision win over Anderson Silva, the man he called his ‘clone’ for decorating his moves after the Brazilian middleweight star.
In a recent interview, the 29-year-old middleweight prospect has spoken about wanting to fight light heavyweight champ Jones who recently defended his title from Anthony Smith at UFC 235.
Exciting Young Man
Adesanya made history after he defeated former 10-time middleweight king ‘Spider’ Silva at the main event of UFC 234 in Australia. The undefeated star has caught Jones’ attention who was also teased to be a clone of the Kiwi fighter.
“We have similar body types and we’re both black. And that’s about it,” ‘Bones’ said of Adesanya in an interview with the UFC.
“I don’t think we fight alike, I don’t think we fight similar, I do a lot of wrestling, heavy ground-and-pound, a lot of submissions, I strike in both stances. I feel like our games are very different,” he added.
Despite disagreeing on being compared to Adesanya, the New Yorker said he has a lot of respect for the rising talent.
“But I do respect him, a lot. I think he is going to be a force to be reckoned with,” Jones stated. “
“He is great for the sport, great talker and he finishes fights. He is a very exciting young man.”
The Nigerian mixed martial artist now hints at a possible super fight against Jones sometime in the future.“Jones and Silva have spoken about fighting each other for years as well, but that never came to fruition,” Adesanya said in an interview with Submission Radio.
“This I feel is different. So yeah, I look forward to that challenge as well.”
During the UFC 235 fight week, the light heavyweight champion acknowledged the possibility of sharing the Octagon with Adesanya one day. For this, the 29-year-old believes ‘smart’ fighters as Jones, in fact, recognize his threat in the competition.
“That shows you how serious they’re taking me, the smart ones, how much they know I’m a threat, how serious they’re taking me,” the Last Stylebender stated.
“Like, [Jones] mentioned it on fight week of 235 or whatever, and then I went back two weeks prior on messages with Eugene when I put the question out there, how are we going to beat Jon Jones? And he kind of just laid down the rough blueprint. And I blurred a lot of it out, but yeah, we’re focusing on Gastelum,” he continued.
