Gunnar Nelson’s stunning victory over Alex Oliveira in their welterweight fight at UFC 231 was literally made up of sweat, elbows, and blood.
The 30-year old Icelandic just scored one of the bloodiest submissions in the history of Ultimate Fighting Championship as his nasty elbows and rear naked choke forced his bloodied opponent to tap out in the second round of their welterweight showdown at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada, Saturday night.

The 14th ranked welterweight fighter scored his bounce-back win after overwhelming his Brazilian opponent in a bloody showdown at UFC 231. Oliveira came off with a blistering start as he managed to land an elbow to the head before giving Nelson a solid beating in the closing stage of the first round.
But the Icelandic fighter gave the Brazilian a taste of his own medicine as he connected with solid elbows while in full mount, which caused a gruesome cut on Oliveira’s forehead. As blood covered the Brazilian’s face, Gunni moved to the back and locked a rear naked choke, forcing the 13th-ranked welterweight fighter to raise the white flag.

“That was definitely not how I expected the fight to go, but I am very happy to finish him in the second. He came out fast, and I had to adjust my plan just a bit. He caught me with a shot that I thought was to the back of my head, but maybe it wasn’t. Whatever it was, he certainly got me good with that one. However, in the second, things started to change, and I found the finish I was looking for. It feels good to be back, and I want to be more active now. I just want to get out there and keep fighting as much as possible,” said Nelson in a post-fight interview.
