Yes, you read that right, General Motors, the car company has actually developed a diet plan. Called the GM diet plan, the company developed it in order to help its employees lose weight. As a company that cares for its employees, the goal of the GM diet plan is for people to feel healthier.
The company collaborated with the US Department of Agriculture and Food and Drug Administration, and the result is one great diet plan. Now, as with every diet I try, I always look at the pros and cons, and then decide whether I want to try or not. Luckily for you, I’ve already made a list of pros and cons, and I will show them for you, as well as explain how the diet works and how to adjust it to fit your needs.
Pros of GM Diet Plan
- Quick and easy way to shed some pounds
- Promotes healthy eating, as it consists mostly of fruits and vegetables
- Body Detox
- Consumption of foods that burn calories
Cons of GM Diet Plan
- Restrictive, very few options for meals
- Side effects include muscle weakness, hunger, fatigue, low energy, and possible dehydration
- Not suitable for combination of exercise and diet, since you are low on energy to get your workout done. However, 10 minutes of light exercise is recommended even while you are on the GM Diet plan.
What is the GM Diet Plan?
To put it simply, the GM Diet plan is a diet consisting of vegetables and fruits. There haven’t been studies proving the benefits of the diet, but user reviews are encouraging. The diet plan comes with its own application in the Google Play Store, and while there are negative reviews, more than 80% are positive.
Let’s take a look at some of the reviews (Please note the reviews might consist spelling and grammar mistakes, but I wanted to leave them authentic).
It really works. While installing I was thinking this is just a random diet plan but I lost 4.8 kgs in just 7 days. Unbelievable but GM has done it. You may feel weakness, I blacked out for a second on day 2 and sometimes vibration in my fingers on day 5 and 6 nothing serious. I would suggest you to use same size bowl it would keep the intake same. Now I am going for 7 days juice cleanse and after that I will follow the same GM diet plan again
Very good diet plan but lack of instruction. I tried to follow seriously but I was become very weak in 3 days. I was feeling severe headache. I did not know what to do. This diet plan is very tough and only one can do who is strong enough to withstand these 7 days. I think in app there must be some more thing to keep ur self active. Or one must take full rest during this diet plan. I positively feel it will work but not my cup of tea.
Great app GM diet is nothing new to me. I am a regular follower of it every other month as its benefits are amazing. Not only u lose weight but also u detox and flush away all toxins and it makes a noticable change in your complexion…i recommend this to brides-to-be’ s as i did the same and had awesome comments from everybody. If you can couple up with some exercises, ideally yoga, 😉 it may double the results…i love this app coz of the cool meal plan and shopping list…
The best aspect of the GM Diet plan is that you need absolutely zero preparation. You can start the diet whenever you feel like it. Just go to the grocery store, get your bags full with veggies and fruits, and start it. After the diet is over, you can expect to shed anywhere between 10 and 17 pounds.
Sample Seven Day Plan
Now, let’s take a look at a sample seven day plan. Be warned, people that prefer non-vegetarian foods, such as meat and fish might be challenged to get to the end of the road. And yes, you might miss on some protein intake during the diet. But, for a quick weight loss sprint, the GM Diet plan is great. Remember, this is not a marathon, this is a sprint. But I also must warn you, after the diet, you should remember to follow balanced and healthy diet. Now, onto the diet plan.
Fruits are the only source of food and energy during the first day. There is no limit on quantity, or on quality of the fruits. The only exception is that you cannot consume bananas on the first day of the day.
Melons are great source of energy, as well as watermelons. Both offer enough healthy nutrients for a low calorie trade-off. You can also drink your fruits. As in, put several fruits in blender or food processor, and drink up!
Day 1 is reserved for fruits only, and Day 2 is reserved only for vegetables. As you replace fruits with vegetables, remember, there are some restrictions. For example, a baked potato is the recommended breakfast option.
The best way to get your veggies on the second day is with salad. For example, I’d recommend some cabbage and lettuce for your morning snack, while cherry tomatoes make for a great afternoon snack. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers, beets, lettuce, all these make for great options for lunch and dinner.
Things get interesting as you progress. The third day is reserved for combination of fruits and vegetables. The only restriction is that you still cannot eat bananas (don’t worry, they’ll come soon) and potatoes. Every other fruit and veggie is available, and there is no restriction on quantity. At this point of the diet plan, your body is more than prepared for the fat burning process.
I promised you bananas, and I stand by my word. So, feasts yourself, as Day 4 brings you a menu of bananas and milk. You can (and should) eat up to 8 bananas on day four, and drink up to three glasses of milk. Day 4 is also reserved for a soup, and I will share the famous GM soup later.
If there are meat lovers out there, this is your feast day. The menu for Day 5 includes beef and tomatoes. You’ll consume at least six tomatoes, and at least two portions of beef. At this point, you should also increase your water intake, more on that later. You can consume the beef any way you like, including hamburger patties.
The knock on the GM Diet plan is that it is low on protein. But that cannot be further from the truth. We had beef on Day 5, and Day 6 is reserved for beef (one of the best sources for protein) as well. The trick is to replace tomatoes with other vegetables. There is no limit on veggies on day 6, as long as they are not tomatoes.
The Last Day of the diet is reserved for juices, vegetables, and brown rice. There is no restriction on amount of veggies and fruits you can consume. One thing to note: make sure your fruit juices are fresh, not filled with concentrate and added sugar. This is where juicers and food processors come in handy. By the time day 7 ends, you’ll shed at least 10 pounds.
Now, I also must say a word or two about water consumption during the diet. What you need to know is that water is the best choice of beverage during the GM Diet Plan. But that is the case for almost any other weight loss and diet plan. There are alternatives, and they are usually recommended beverages you need to consume alongside water. The “other” beverages include green tea, black tea, black coffee and club soda.
The Aftermath of the GM Diet Plan
A question many have is “what happens when the diet has finished”? Well, it all depends on what your goal is and what you want to achieve. For example, if you want to lose even more pounds, you can repeat the diet again. However, I would recommend you wait at least one or two weeks to pass before going on the diet again.
After the first week has passed, some people add wine to the menu. Yes, you can, but limit your alcohol consumption to one or two glasses.
Some people also experience jo-jo effect, as in the pounds come back. This depends solely on you, and nobody else. If you go back to junk food, processed foods and similar unhealthy options, yes, you will gain weight again. However, if you take something out of the diet, and include more vegetables and fruits to your regular diet, the pounds will stay off.
The trick with the GM Diet Plan is to promote healthy eating, as in more veggies and fruits. So, bear in mind, no diet is perfect, and the GM has its pros and cons. But it is arguably the best “quick fix” when you need to shed some pounds quick.
The GM Soup
I promised you the GM soup, and I intend to make good on my promise. To put it simply, there is no better and easier way to get lots of vegetables in your diet. The soup is recommended during the veggie days of the GM Diet plan, but you can also prepare it once the diet is over. After all, it is ridiculously easy.
- 6 large onions
- 2 green peppers
- A bunch of celery
- 1 cabbage
- Few tomatoes
- Chicken soup stock
- Salt and Pepper
Chop all the vegetables, and then combine the ingredients in a large soup pot. Let the ingredients simmer in the pot for 45 minutes. You can give or take few minutes, and you’ll notice when the vegetables are cooked. Some prefer an alternative, which is to grill the fresh vegetables, and then add them to water for a little barbecue flavor.
