Nine years ago, an aspiring bodybuilder went viral online for his insanely strange diet. Sure, a diet has to be strict, clean, and healthy, but people can always mix it up. However, for Danny Andrews, fish and rice cake was enough to save the day.
At 16-years old, Andrews ate fish and rice cake eight times a day (yes 8x, not a typo) as part of his preparation for a bodybuilding competition. Fast forward to 2019, the known “fish and rice cake guy” is now a massive man mountain. Was his diet really effective?
Fish and Rice Cake
At a young age, Danny Andrews wanted to become the next big thing in the bodybuilding world. In 2010, he made his first step in his career by joining the Mr Cumbria bodybuilding competition.
Before the actual day of the contest, he was featured in a documentary entitled Baby Faced Bodybuilders at BBC Three, where he shared his preparation for the upcoming event.
“At 8 o’clock I’ll have fish & a rice cake. At 10 o’clock I’ll have fish. At 12 o’clock I’ll have fish…………… & a rice cake. At 2’clock I’ll have fish. At 4 o’clock before I train, I’ll have fish & a rice cake. After I train I’ll have my fish, then I’ll have some more fish with a rice cake. Then I’ll have some fish before I go to bed.”
The clip went viral online, and even before Andrews attempted to make a name in the sport, he has already taken the spotlight, only it was in the online world. His interview with BBC has racked up hundreds of thousands of views on social media, with some people making fun of his fish and rice cake diet.
“Some people rip me saying I thought fish was brain food, but clearly it’s not. People ask if I was sponsored by Captain Birdseye. People have made memes and remixes on YouTube, also Scott Mills used to play it weekly, he even spoke to Jake Gyllenhaal about it,” Andrews told Ladbible.
Nine years after, the viral “fish and rice cake guy” has achieved his winning bodybuilding physique, though he took time off from the sport and is looking to make a return soon. Was his diet the secret to this great figure?
Andrews said it was not. In fact, he hates to eat fish now.
“My diet was only that for the last two weeks before my show – I don’t actually like fish. Instead of saying I have eight meals of fish a day, and every other meal I have a rice cake, I was trying to work out times. So it makes me appear absolutely stupid, fitting the stereotype of the typical bodybuilder.”
“At the time I was so embarrassed, but I have embraced it. I look completely different now when I say I’m into the gym people ask if I’m on the fish and the rice cakes, not knowing it’s me.”
