When you think of losing weight, you definitely think of proper diet and regular exercise. I can’t argue with that fact. After all, I always recommend that you combine exercise with a weight loss plan. But today, I want to talk about a different idea – an alternative method for losing weight. And that is using essential oils for weight loss.
In this guide, I’ll tell you which essential oils you should use, how to use them, and why they’re good. But please note: do not expect a miracle. Essential oils will help with weight loss, but you won’t lose 10 pounds in a week just by using them. The important aspect is that you will feel good, you will sleep well, and you will burn more calories and fat.
Lemon essential oil
Compressed from the peel, lemon essential oil usually has a clean and inviting scent. This oil helps by suppressing weight gain, relieving pain from working out, increasing energy, and improving your mood. But more importantly, it contains limonene, a compound that burns fat.
Lemon oil is very powerful for treating negative feelings. You know that feeling: “I’m going to start working out next week; this week I’m too tired”? Well, lemon helps with that. In addition, lemons contain norepinephrine, a compound that improves the oxygen flow through your body. Last, but not least, lemon oil is great for massaging your joints and muscles after a workout session.
Grapefruit essential oil
Grapefruit is used as an antiseptic. In terms of weight loss, grapefruit is a great fruit because not only does it have a low amount of carbs and sugars, but it also vastly improves your energy. And it contains lots of fiber as well. But now let’s get to the essential oil. As with grapefruit, this essential oil helps by cutting the craving for sweets, boosting your metabolism, reducing abdominal fat accumulation, and increasing energy levels and endurance.
But the main reason grapefruit essential oil helps with weight loss is because of nootkatone, an enzyme in our body that controls the metabolic rate and the energy levels. And since grapefruit is also member of the citrus family, the essential oil contains limonene, a compound we talked about previously. Limonene helps with dissolving fat more easily.
Fennel essential oil
This essential oil has a bit of an earthy, sweet odor and taste. Distilled from seeds, fennel helps by improving digestion, reducing weight gain, improving your sleep, and suppressing appetite. There are two important ways in which fennel helps with weight loss.
The first one is thanks to melanin. The compound converts “bad fat” into fat that can be used for energy. This same compound also helps with sleep. By providing a restful sleep, fennel reduces your stress, which in the end prevents sugar and junk food cravings.
Cinnamon essential oil

My recommendation to my friends who want to lose weight is to add one teaspoon of cinnamon into their smoothies to boost fat burning. Cinnamon improves your insulin sensitivity, boosts your metabolic rate, regulates blood sugar levels, and reduces inflammation. For those of you who don’t know, inflammation is the source of all evil (or all diseases).
The biggest way cinnamon helps is by regulating insulin. This is the hormone that metabolizes carbs and fat and facilitates absorption of blood glucose. When the cells in your body stop responding to insulin, your body stores fat. And that results in weight gain. Cinnamon prevents that by making your body use the fat for energy instead of storing it in your belly.
Bergamot essential oil
When you think of essential oils for weight loss, you rarely think of bergamot. After all, bergamot is more of a perfume substance than anything else. Known for its spicy and tangy aroma, bergamot boosts your mood and increases your energy, two factors you need to lose weight.
Anxiety and depression are often the reason you can’t lose weight. They both throw you into an emotional roller coaster and eventually to emotional eating. And as you eat more, you gain weight, and you feel more depressed. Bergamot will help you break that cycle by reducing your stress and boosting your mood.
Peppermint essential oil
This fresh, minty oil, with its intense aroma, has a calming and cooling effect. Many people use it topically for massaging aching joints and muscles. Some people use it to treat a cough, cold, and sinus problems. But in terms of weight loss, peppermint essential oil helps by improving your mood, improving digestion, reducing appetite, and increasing your energy levels.
Made mostly of menthol, peppermint was used in ancient times to treat indigestion. Nowadays, it serves the same purpose when you want to lose weight. In addition, peppermint is an effective muscle relaxant, making it great for post-workout massages.
How do essential oils help?
Essential oils have been used for therapeutic and aroma-therapeutic purposes for several years. Alternative medicine celebrates their unique healing properties. Essential oils are derived from seeds, flowers, fruits, leaves of plants, and roots.
Aromatherapy, the therapy using essential oils, focuses on stimulating certain parts of the brain. Alternative medicine experts believe that this stimulation can have a positive impact on your mental, physical, and emotional state. Our nose can detect more than one trillion odors, and essential oils work in that favor. The receptors essential oils stimulate can control blood pressure, stress levels, pleasure, motivation, heart rate, and much more.
Essential oils have been used for years for anxiety and hormone imbalance treatments. And while there is no substitute for proper diet and regular exercise, essential oils help by stimulating receptors. They impact the mental state, which consists of emotional eating, lack of consistent motivation, slow metabolism, fatigue, and even cravings for sweet food and low energy. All those factors contribute to weight loss.
Five ways to use essential oils for weight loss
Now that we know which essential oils help with weight loss, let’s take a look how you can use them. There are five ways that I recommend.
- Mix several essential oils with a carrier oil like almond or coconut oil, and massage the areas where you want to lose fat.
- An anti-cellulite rub is essentially the same thing, but there strict rules as to which essential oils you need. For this massage, you need 10 drops of grapefruit, 2 drops of peppermint, 2 drops of ginger, 2 drops of cypress, and 5 drops of rosemary oil. Blend with a carrier oil and apply to the affected areas.
- For a rejuvenating bath, add any of the above-mentioned oils to your warm bath. Your mind and body will be rejuvenated, and you will be relaxed and ready for another day at the gym.
- If you want to suppress your appetite, blend together lemon, ginger, peppermint, and mandarin oils. Add the mixture to your diffuser. It might sound strange that breathing air in your home will make you feel full, but it is true.
- You can drink essential oils by dissolving them in a glass of water. Add just one drop of any essential oil into a glass of water and drink it.
