Before being featured in the main card at last Saturday’s UFC 227,
Garbrandt won the title in December 2016 by decision over Dominick Cruz. However, his reign didn’t last long enough after suffering his first loss to Dillashaw at UFC 217.
Dillashaw knocked out Garbrandt in the second round of their fight, earning the bantamweight title. And recently, Dillashaw
Easy Journey for Garbrandt
After his first loss to Dillashaw, fans thought it would be difficult for Garbrandt to get a title shot again. Surprisingly, during the UFC 227 preparation, the MMA promotion announced that they officially granted Garbrandt an immediate rematch, despite his short reign as champ.
During their rematch, Dillashaw wasted little time to defeat Garbrandt for the second time, knocking him out

Dillashaw Knows Why
In the latest edition of Brendan Schaub’s Below the Belt, Dillashaw said Garbrandt easily got the chance to fight because the UFC invested in the former champion.
“We agreed to [a fight with Demetrious Johnson], but then he had to get shoulder surgery and so the UFC was like, ‘We don’t know how long he’s gonna be out, we want you to fight Cody [again],’” Dillashaw said(transcribed by MMA Fighting). “I’m still waiting for a phone call right now from my manager saying, ‘Man, the UFC wants you to fight Cody again. They think it was a fluke.’ [Laughs]. You know what I mean?
Now that he defeated Garbrandt once again, Dillashaw wants to let UFC know that he’s willing to do it for as long as they want.
“I’m just kidding. The UFC’s put so much money and time into that kid, they loved him. They were hard for that kid. They wanted to pump him up. Even the [UFC Embedded episodes] coming up to this fight – I’m the world f*c**ng champion and it’s about him! Dude, it’s f*c**ng ridiculous. I’m just waiting for this phone call saying, ‘They want you to fight Cody again.’ Sweet! Pay me some more money, I’ll knock his ass out again.”
Dana White Believes in Garbrandt
During Garbrandt’s short reign as undefeated bantamweight champion, Dana White made it known that he is rooting for the former champ to become the next big star. Unfortunately, Dillashaw clearly won’t let that happen.
But there’s still a chance for the former champ to make his way back up, that’s if Dillashaw will have a rematch against Dominick Cruz.
However, Dillashaw doesn’t seem to agree to that idea.
”You want to be sidelined for two years saying you’re ‘injured’ and then all of a sudden I’m looking for a contender, and you’re like ‘Oh, I’m ready,’” Dillashaw said. “You just want to pass the murderer’s row up. You don’t want to challenge yourself. To me, it’s a pussy move. ‘Oh, I’m hurt.’ Sure, maybe you were hurt but go out there and prove yourself. Go out there and beat Marlon Moraes, and let’s do this dance.”
Cruz defeated Dillashaw back in 2016 and then lost to Garbrandt a few months later. The possibility of Dillashaw vs Cruz 2 might be another reason for UFC to give Garbrandt another title shot.
