Devonte Smith’s Punches Were So Hard They Punctured Hyun Ma’s Soul

Devonte Smith disfigured Dong Hyun Ma in the dying minutes of the opening round; showering him with hammerfists after to score a TKO stoppage at the 3:53 mark.

Smith recorded his sixth continuous win at the featured ESPN prelim of UFC 234 in Melbourne, Australia. The impressive first-round stoppage victory of the ‘King Kage’ marks his second UFC lightweight grand slam.

Smith caught most fans’ attention in a New York minute after being the crowd favourite; playing faster than the opposite man on the cage. He initially frustrated Ma’s attempts to start rampage while bruising him with low kicks once in a while.

In the middle of the first round, the American fighter was able to hurt his rival with a two-punch combination and continue with his battering business. From there, it was only a matter of time before the game ended in a mostly one-sided action.

Smith landed a solid left hook on his South Korean opponent before scoring a straight right that forced Ma to stare down the canvas. The 25-year-old blurred all doubts after following this combination up with a few hammerfists behind the ear; signalling referee Herb Dean to jump in and call it a fight.

“I had to be very patient. I knew if I was overly anxious in there, I knew he would grapple me and we would have to deal with all of that and it would be dragged out,” Smith said after gaining the victory.

“So I knew I had to stay smart and keep my distance, and when I saw his leg go weak, I knew it was time to go home and do what I do. I’m now going to chill. I’ll be back in Denver training until I get that fight with Francisco Trinaldo, so once I get that fight I’ll be back.”

The lightweight prospect now has a professional record of 10 wins and a single loss; snapping the Busan native’s three-fight winning streak in his UFC 234 success. Below are the full results of the UFC’s first pay-per-view event for 2019 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia:
