Oscar Del La Hoya Has Some Good Words for Manny Pacquiao
Ahead of the highly-anticipated fight between Manny Pacquiao and Lucas Matthyse, former boxing champ Oscar De La Hoya recalled how his former tormentor made an impact to the boxing industry.
The former six-division champion talked about Manny Pacquaio in the final day of the press conference for the Fights of Champion.
He stressed how proud he is of the Filipino boxer not just about his career inside the ring but also outside it.
“First of all, I want to tell Manny Pacquiao how proud I am of him.”
Fist With a Purpose
Pacman subdued De La Hoya in their match back in 2008. He pulled the rug from under the Golden Boy via a vicious knock out in the eighth round.
More than the loss, it also signalled the retirement of De La Hoya. After losing to Pacquiao, he decided to hang his gloves and shifted his focus to promoting fights.

But De La Hoya sure knows that Pacquiao is more than just an eight-division champion.
He believed that he is a legend both inside and outside the ring.
“Not only because he has become one of the most important legends in the sport of boxing but because he’s a legend outside the ring. Manny Pacquiao, in the recent history of the sport, has become one of the iconic figures.”
For the Golden Boy, Pacquiao has been a source of hope for young fighters. The Filipino boxer is known for his rugs to riches story. This has inspired hundreds of Filipino aspirants to try to take the same route as his.
“He’s building bridges between countries, he’s attracting the youth to become fighters, to become warriors. He’s giving them hope. Manny Pacquiao is doing this through his fists, he’s doing through his heart, he’s doing it because he loves to give back.”
Pacquiao looks to snatch the WBA regular welterweight belt from Matthyse this Saturday. De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotion handles Matthyse’s boxing career while Pacquiao’s MP Promotions is in charge of this upcoming Kuala Lumpur card.
