Daniel Cormier might need to wait longer before the Ultimate Fighting Championship makes his dream fight with Brock Lesnar happen.
The reigning UFC heavyweight champion, Daniel “DC” Cormier, has been campaigning for a showdown with pay-per-view behemoth, Brock Lesnar.
Shortly after Cormier’s first-round technical knockout of Stipe Miocic, DC and Lesnar engaged in a WWE-like confrontation to plant the seeds of their rivalry.
The 40-year old veteran said he wanted to fight Lesnar in his swan song, before hanging up his gloves on his 40th birthday.
But an injury from the Derrick Lewis fight prolonged Cormier‘s absence, which also puts his retirement plans on hold.
UFC president Dana White stressed that there are still three fights left for the 265-pound kingpin. One of them being the Lesnar clash this year.
But in a surprising turn of events, the promotion’s head honcho is now singing a different tune.
In a recent media scrum, White said the Cormier vs Lesnar title fight might not happen soon.

DC Says Lesnar Is Deserving Of Title Shot
While some fans have raised eyebrows on this potential match-up, the heavyweight champion himself insisted that Lesnar is very much deserving of a crack at UFC gold.
“That’s the fight that needs to happen. He’s a former UFC champ, All-American in college,” Cormier told TMZ Sports.
“This guy’s very very deserving of a fight. He’s gonna get it. Hopefully.”
Luckily for DC, the road to their heavyweight title fight is getting clearer.
Lesnar has re-enrolled in the USADA testing program, while his potential UFC return is now very likely after he lost his WWE Universal Championship at Wrestlemania 35 earlier this month.
Meanwhile, ESPN’s Ariel Helwani has reported that the promotion is targeting summer as the possible date for the Cormier vs Lesnar clash.
The fight is almost a certainty until the UFC chief, Dana White, switched his gears.
DC vs Lesnar Not Happening?
White recently told reporters that it is DC‘s old rival, Stipe Miocic, who might challenge Cormier first for the heavyweight strap.
Asked about the Lesnar fight, he confirmed that the promotion is not working on that bout, which might not happen this year.
“Seriously, that fight is not even in the works. That fight might not even happen first.”
“I don’t know if he (Lesnar) will fight again. We don’t even have a date for him.”
“The first fight might be stipe. We’re gonna wait for Cormier. Cormier went back to the gym to weeks ago, did a light work out and he’s still not healthy.”
“As soon as he is healthy to fight we can make a decision on when we’re gonna do him and Stipe.”

“Nothing happened (with Brock). Brock and I haven’t even talked. Like I said, many times, when Brock Lesnar is ready, he’ll call me,” White ended.
