Conor McGregor Says Dustin Poirier Won’t Fight Khabib Next

After winning the interim lightweight championship, Dustin Poirier is set to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov next for the undisputed title. However, Conor McGregor said this fight would not happen.

The UFC 236 main event bout lived up to the hype on Saturday night.

Max Holloway moved up to 155 pounds in a bid to capture another UFC gold. Standing on his way was Poirier, who has been waiting for his shot at the lightweight strap.

The lightweight pair delivered an instant classic. They showed tenacity and grit to stretch the fight in full distance.

When the dust settled, it was “The Diamond” who had his hands raised as he won the judges scorecards. It was his fifth straight win since losing to Michael Johnson in 2016.

More importantly, he is now on track to face Khabib for the undisputed lightweight title.

While everyone knows Poirier is heading into the unification bout with Nurmagomedov, the former UFC two-weight champion believes otherwise.

Poirier’s Biggest Career Win

The 30-year old fighter scored the biggest win of his career at UFC 236.

After five rounds of intense MMA actions, Poirier edged out Holloway in the scorecards. He captured the interim lightweight strap via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46).

Shortly after being declared as the winner, the Louisiana native expressed his disbelief on his recent feat.

“This feels amazing. I feel like I’m in a dream right now,” he told Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview.

“I just beat the pound-for-pound best in the world. To be the best, you have to beat the best.”

“Damn, I feel good. I’ve earned this with blood. Paid in full, this is mine.”

He also called out Nurmagomedov to a fight while taking a page out of Daniel Cormier’s playbook.

“In the words of our own Daniel Cormier, get your s— together young man, we have a title to fight for.”

Poirier Vs Diaz Is Next Says McGregor

But if McGregor were to ask, he doesn’t think Poirier will fight Khabib for the undisputed title.

Instead, he is confident that the interim lightweight champ will lock horns with Nate Diaz in his next outing.

“Amazing main event fights.

How fighting should be! Max you are insanely tough!

Please rest up now young Uce, you are a warrior head to toe!

A champion FOREVER. Congratulations Dustin on a much deserved UFC title to your career.

It is Nate next for you like previously scheduled.”

Does this mean he knows something the MMA world doesn’t?

Recently, he has been providing new details on his UFC 229 loss to Khabib.

McGregor claimed he sustained a foot injury weeks ahead of his Octagon return. He has also described Khabib’s grappling skill as ‘overrated’ and said the rematch would prove his claim.

It looks like he is now itching to avenge this ugly loss.

UFC President Dana White said he would talk to Conor in the next few weeks to give him options that will make him happy.

Is an immediate rematch between Khabib and McGregor looming?
