Team McGregor has made a bold claim ahead of the highly anticipated lightweight bout between UFC stars Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani on his MMA show, McGregor’s longtime training partner said the Notorious can pull the rug from under Nurmagomedov if their clash went to the ground.
The former jiu-jitsu champion has formed a strong bond with the Notorious since working together for the Nater Diaz rematch. And with McGregor set to face one of the biggest fights in his career, Danis is helping him anew in his preparation for his showdown with the Eagle this October.
Danis, now fighting under Bellator, believes that with McGregor’s natural athleticism and fluidity, he can dominate Nurmagomedov in one skill department: grappling.
”Conor could beat Khabib in a grappling match. I think if you put them in a grappling match like ADCC, I think people would be surprised. Conor is a special athlete. The way he moves his body. He has the ability to move in certain ways and make passes and stuff. He’s a really good athlete.”
Despite Khabib being one of the most feared grapplers in the promotion, Danis is firm in his belief that the Irish star can defeat Khabib in a grappling match.
Stick to His Feet
Danis was surprised that many MMA fans see McGregor as the underdog in the upcoming fight. For him, he sees it the other way around. He cited McGregor’s victory over Chad Mendes as a reference that he can surpass another storm that is Khabib Nurmagomedov.
“Chad Mendes is a better wrestler than Khabib. What credentials does Khabib have in wrestling? Maybe in sambo. Chad Mendes was second in NCAA.”
But Dillon insisted that Conor should stick to his feet and finish The Eagle off the ground.
“Michael Johnson caught Khabib. Michael Johnson is not at the level that Conor is.”
