Kamaru Usman has spoiled talks about Tyron Woodley being the best welterweight fighter of all time after he seized the 170-lb belt at UFC 235 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now, the UFC names possible opponent to baptise the new champ in his first title defence.
Woodley marched on his fifth try to protect the welterweight strap in the star-studded pay-per-view event at the T-mobile Arena on Saturday night to cement his legacy in the 170-lb division.
However, it was Usman who made history after being the first African-born fighter ever to wear a championship belt.
Shortly after the historic win, the Nigerian phenom got into a dirty encounter with another welterweight in Colby Covington. Usman and his manager Ali Abdelaziz confronted the American contender while he was in line at a restaurant in the Casino.
Now, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reveals on Twitter that the UFC is planning to pair the newly-crowned welterweight champion to Covington on his first title defence.
Usman Vs Covington
Before UFC 235 took place, Covington has been announcing that it should be him getting the title shot opposite Woodley in Las Vegas. ‘Chaos’ then trolled Usman during the ceremonial open workouts, trash-talking the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ through a megaphone.
The former interim champion has been questioning UFC President Dana White on why he wasn’t getting a match yet. At the UFC 235 open workouts, Covington has also live-streamed himself gambling at the Palms Casino looking for and grilling the promotions chief.
Covington last stepped foot in the Octagon in June 2018 where he won the interim welterweight title at UFC 225. However, the belt was later stripped off his waist after reportedly turning down a match against Woodley.
According to Okamoto, the UFC has now informed ‘Chaos’ despite their heated argument after UFC 235, that he’s fighting Usman next.
“BREAKING: I’m told UFC has already informed Colby Covington he will receive the first shot against newly crowned champion Kamaru Usman. No date or venue for you yet, but Covington will get the shot.”
