I don’t know if you know this, but you can replace every hair product, shampoo, conditioner and styling product with coconut oil. There are so many coconut oil for hair uses, that I am simply amazed how people are ignoring the oil. With coconut oil you can get lush, healthy and shiny hair in just few minutes. Let’s take a look at some of the uses.
One of the most common uses of coconut oil for hair is conditioning. With no chemicals and toxins, coconut oil makes one of the best natural hair conditioners on the market. Coconut oil prevents your hair from losing protein, which results with breakage and dryness. Thanks to coconut oil, you will also protect your hair from excessive brushing and combing, and thanks to the natural ingredients, coconut oil can be used on children as well.
Depending on your hair length, you need to use different portions of coconut oil. For example, for short hair, a ¼ of a teaspoon is more than enough. Warm the coconut oil in your palms, and then apply on your hair. If you have longer and thicker hair, increase the dosage to ½ teaspoon. The dosage is for normal hair, and you should use coconut oil after washing with regular shampoo.
However, if you want to restore your hair and use coconut oil as intensive conditioner, increase the dosage to 1 teaspoon for short hair and 2 teaspoons for longer hair. Cover your hair with shower cap after applying coconut oil, wait one or two hours, and then wash with gentle shampoo.
If you have dry and/or damaged hair, coconut oil won’t be enough. In this case, you need to add a few drops of sandalwood essential oil to the mix.
There are several factors that contribute to thinning hair, iron deficiency and thyroid problems among the first. Aside from treating your condition medically, you need to support healthy hair grow and increase growth of your hair. Coconut oil helps in those situations. Mix coconut oil treatment with natural hair loss remedies like foods high in omega-3 fats.
How to use coconut oil for hair growth? Start by massaging into your scalp on dry hair to improve blood circulation. Use gentle and round movements to massage your hair for 10 minutes per day, three or four days per week. One teaspoon will be more than enough. If you want to use deep conditioning for hair growth, use the conditioner treatment. However, instead of sandalwood, add rosemary essential oil to promote hair growth.
Once you’ve massaged your scalp, cover with shower cap or towel, and wait for few hours. Follow the treatment with natural cleanser.
Coconut Oil versus Dandruff
The problem with cosmetic products for dandruff is they help, but also harm your hair. Due to the high amounts of chemicals, cosmetic products can sometimes even increase your dandruff, instead of helping you get rid of it.
Therefore, I recommend using coconut oil for getting rid of dandruff. How to do it?
The treatment starts before you go to bed, at the end of your day. Wash your hair with natural shampoo and then condition as you normally do.
Melt some coconut oil. Use a comb or hair pick to remove tangles from your hair, and then massage the oil gently into the scalp. Cover your head with a towel and let the coconut oil stay on your head overnight.
In the morning, wash your hair regularly. For maximum results, you can use an Epson salt treatment.
Coconut Oil for Hair Coloring
When you want to change the color of your hair, coconut oil is one of the best basis for mixing colors. The trick with coconut oil is that the oil deeply penetrates your hair, and giving you better hair color results. Your hair color will be even more vibrant than ever, and won’t fade as quickly as usual.
Melt some coconut oil, add coloring herbs or hair color as you normally do. Apply on your hair as you normally do, and then once you get the color you want, shampoo your hair with lukewarm water. Cover with towel or shower cap, and let the color stay overnight. In the morning, wash your hair again.
Sun Damage Protection
During the summer, you hair can suffer from excess sun exposure. To preserve its shininess and promote healthy hair, make sure to use coconut oil from time to time. Apply coconut oil in the morning, especially if you know that your hair will be exposed to sun damage most of the day.
Before you apply coconut oil, make sure to comb your hair. Melt some coconut oil in your palms, and then apply on your hair. Gently massage the oil into your scalp, and then brush again. You are now safe to go outside.
Coconut Oil as Lice Protection
One of the many uses of coconut oil for hair is to fight lice. Coconut oil can both prevent lice, and then fight lice.
How to use coconut oil for lice protection? Same as you use coconut oil as conditioner. The trick here, however, is to add essential oils to the mix, including tea tree oil, anise oil, and ylang ylang oil. Mix the oils with melted coconut oil, and then apply on your scalp. Gently massage the oil, and then use a comb to go through your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap, let it stay for two hours, and then comb your hair again. One trick I want to use is use a hair dryer to heat on the shower cap. You can also stay on sun while the cap is on you.
Once you are done with combing your hair, mix two cups of apple cider vinegar and one cup of water. Spray half of the solution on your hair, then pour the remaining part of the solution on your hair and gently massage your hair. Rinse with water and comb. Repeat the process the next day for maximum effect.
I also love to share some coconut oil for hair beauty tricks. I mentioned you can use coconut oil to style your hair. So let’s take a look at some quick tricks.
