Crystal Palace boxer Craig ‘Spider’ Richards might be up against a younger opponent in his next outing as Matchroom is being urged to set up an intriguing clash between ‘Spider’ and Chad ‘2Slick’ Sugden for the vacant British light heavyweight title.
Richards, who has been undefeated this year, is coming off back-to-back wins against Jake Ball and Andre Sterling respectively.
He first demolished Ball last February with an impressive third-round technical knockout to win the WBA continental title before cruising to a unanimous decision win over the then-undefeated Sterling last June.
Prior to this win-streak, ‘Spider’ needed to endure a rough 2018, where he experienced cancelled fights after spending too much money in training camps.
For Richards, beating big names such as Ball and Sterling has helped him get into the mix.
“I needed to grow into the weight more, because the weight difference was the difference in the fight,” he said of his goal of landing a big fight, per London News Online.
Richards is now boasting a 15-1 win-loss record in his professional boxing career, with his lone loss coming two years ago at the hands of Frank Buglioni for the British title.
Congratulations to the 🕷 Craig Richards for a UD win over previously undefeated Andre Sterling over the weekend🥊 ⠀⠀

Youngest Top 10 Light Heavyweight
Meanwhile, one of his potential next opponents, Sugden, has also been making noise in the boxing scene, winning 10 of his 11 bouts, after a successful career in professional kickboxing.
‘2Slick’ switched to boxing in 2016 after appearing in two big kickboxing bouts in Dubai and Las Vegas respectively under the GLORY promotion in 2015.
The most recent win in his boxing career was against Luke Blackledge at the Bragging Rights event last July held at the Harvey Hadden Stadium in Nottingham.
The win catapulted Sugden into the top 10 light heavyweights in the British boxing, where he is the youngest among all boxers listed at 25 years old.
Sugden, who is backed up by sponsors BillyOh, Evolution Waste Management, Extrudakerb and also Has Scott Robinson on board as his full-time Nutritionist, Scott also works with Callum Smith, Kal Yafai, Conor Benn, Scott Quigg. Chad also holds notable wins against Norbert Szekeres, Daniel Borisov, Kieron Gray, and many others.
The Real Deal
In a letter sent to English promoter Eddie Hearn, Suggy’s Gym manager Dean Sugden proposed a fight between the young Sugden and Richards for the vacant British light heavyweight title.
Dean stressed that this is a good fight to make as other top 10 light heavyweights are busy with other promotions.
“What about Craig Richards v Chad Sugden (Number 10) for Vacant British on Matchroom Dec or early next year,” the former kickboxing World champion wrote.
“Chad (25) is the youngest in the TOP 10 light heavyweights in Britain and was the youngest ever Pro World ISKA Champion at 18.”
“He fought and won in Las Vegas on Glory Kickboxing and sells more tickets than Craig Richards even in London.”
Dean said that ‘2Slick’ is now the real deal in boxing and making this light heavyweight fight against Richards will be a win-win situation for Hearn’s Matchroom.
Chad is a massive ticket seller and probably has the biggest fan base and following from a Nottingham-born boxer since Carl Froch.
Chad’s next fight would be on October 12, check out the official poster below:
