Cain Velasquez has been out of the cage since scoring a knockout win in July 2016. Now that a heavyweight match against Francis Ngannou is apparently in the works it seeme we will see him back in the Octagon.
ESPN’s Ariel Helwani announced on Twitter that the UFC is currently working on a headlining match between Velasquez and Ngannou for UFC Phoenix on February 17. Though no official confirmation came from the promotion, the possibility isn’t minimal.
“UFC is in serious talks to book Cain Velasquez vs. Francis Ngannou as the main event for UFC Phoenix on Feb. 17, according to multiple sources. The fight isn’t finalized just yet, sources say, but is currently moving in the right direction.”

Former UFC heavyweight champ Velasquez is apparently heading UFC on ESPN 1 at Talking Stick Resort & Casino in Phoenix, Ariz with a fight against ‘The Predator’ next year. The card will air on ESPN following early prelims on ESPN+.
The 36-year-old heavyweight hasn’t stepped in the cage since knocking out Travis Browne in the first round of the UFC 200 fight two years ago. Aside from that, Cain has only fought twice in the last five years while facing various injuries.
Now that he’s apparently healthy for another bout, he will usher in the UFC’s new era on ESPN, like what he did after headlining the promotion’s debut on FOX in 2011. The American fighter’s contract has apparently been stalled with the UFC brass before, preventing his comeback.
Ngannou, on the other hand, is currently UFC’s sixth-ranked heavyweight contender, coming off a crucial main event win against Curtis Blaydes at UFC Fight Night 141 in November. After making it up to a title fight in January, he eventually lost to then-champ Stipe Miocic.
Let’s see if ‘The Predator’ will spoil the legendary heavyweight’s return or will be Cain’s first step to a successful comeback.
