Dana White had confirmed that the promotion is currently working on a welterweight showdown between Ben Askren and Jorge Masvidal and it did not take long before the UFC newcomer responded to this matchup.
The former ONE and Bellator undefeated champion has finally made his debut in the UFC cage. He met Robbie Lawler in the main card of the stacked UFC 235 and came out with a controversial win.
Askren bucked a slow start and pulled off a come-from-behind stoppage to barge into the win column for the first time in his UFC career.
With their fight ending in a controversy, it looked like the Nevada-based promotion is on its way to book an immediate rematch.
But the UFC has booked Lawler for a rematch with Tyron Woodley this June.
Meanwhile, White just recently revealed that Askren is fighting Masvidal next, with “Funky” already throwing jabs to the Brazilian in his latest social media rant.

Askren vs Masvidal
MMA fans were already expecting a fight between Masvidal and Leon Edwards this July, following their backstage confrontation at UFC London two weeks ago.
Both have expressed their interest in a future showdown to settle their unfinished business.
But citing Edwards’ position in the welterweight rankings, White said they are not fighting soon. Instead, it is Askren who could be facing “Gamebred” next.
“Masvidal’s ranked No. 5 right now, Edwards is No. 10,” stated White (via MMA Mania).
“So we are working on something for Masvidal and Edwards, but not each other.”
“We’re actually talking about Ben Askren vs. Masvidal right now.”
It is surprising that White now considers the fighters’ rankings in booking a fight as they just had set up a battle between unranked Anthony Pettis and top-5 contender Stephen Thompson.
Nonetheless, the Askren vs Masvidal is still a good match-up, with a potential shot at a UFC gold could be on the line.
Shortly after White revealed their plans, the American welterweight took to Twitter and challenged Masvidal to agree to a fight.
“Here’s the deal, Dana came out and said this morning they’re looking to do me and Masvidal.”
“I heard that. I said yes last week. It didn’t take me more than 10 seconds to say, ‘Of course, Jorge. Let’s do this. You think you’re a gangster.'”
“Well, now I’m starting to hear he’s getting cold feet, he doesn’t want to do it, he doesn’t want to fight because he’s scared. Jorge! Just tell the people.”
“Are you scared? If you’re scared, I will move on to somebody else. If you’re not scared, June 8, Chicago. I’m free, you’re free, let’s do this.”
“It’s really simple.”
“The winner’s probably going to get a title shot, Jorge, so there’s quite a bit on the line, and I think it would be in your best interest to stop being a chicken and just. Say. Yes.”
Meanwhile, here’s how Masvidal reacted to Askren’s callout.
They must’ve told him i was next ✌🏼 #theresurrection
