Artem Lobov Says He Is Taking Over Boxing & Gets In Heated Feud With Ben Askren

Shortly after the UFC granted him a release, Artem Lobov found himself exchanging shots with newcomer Ben Askren on social media.

The Russian-Irish mixed martial artist has called out various combat sports personalities on Tuesday after confirming on Twitter that he is no longer a part of the UFC roster. But it was the former Bellator and ONE FC welterweight champion who came up with an unexpected response, which led to a heated Twitter spat.

Locked and Loaded

On Tuesday, Artem Lobov announced on social media that he is now ready to take on anyone while tagging various MMA, boxing, and kickboxing promotions after the UFC granted him a release.

He started his UFC career on a losing note as he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Ryan Hall at The Ultimate Fighter lightweight finals in 2015. The 32-year old fighter, who trains with former double champion Conor McGregor, cruised to another unanimous decision loss in his second UFC appearance before winning the next two fights against Chris Avila and Teruto Ishihara respectively.

Then, “The Russian Hammer” suffered a complete turnaround after his first win streak as he went on to lose his next three outings, all via unanimous decision. Lobov collected two wins and five losses in his three-year stay with the UFC. He is 13-15-1 overall in his professional MMA career.

Lobov is reportedly eyeing an MMA bout this March, but the Nevada-based promotion will not book him for his next fight until April. A report from ESPN claimed that he has still three fights left under his UFC contract, but the Russian GOAT has no business in playing the waiting game, so he asked for a release instead.

The Russian GOAT now wants to bring his talents to some of UFC’s rival MMA promotions including Bellator, ONE FC, and Rizin. He also challenged Paul Malignaggi and former world champion Amir Khan to a boxing fight.

Trolling the SBG Ireland product, UFC newcomer Ben Askren reposted Lobov’s tweet, along with the caption: “Did the GoAT get cut? @frontrowbria,” which sparked a war of words between the two mixed martial artists.

“Funky” has labelled Lobov’s career a “gimmick” after “The Russian Hammer” vows to take the welterweight belt if he succeeds in taking over the boxing world.

Asken was traded to UFC from ONE Championship late last year in exchange of flyweight GOAT, Demetrious Johnson.

He is set to make his debut against current champion Robbie Lawler this March 2 in the main card of the stacked UFC 235 and will have the chance to become the first fighter to capture the welterweight championship in three different promotions.

Lobov, meanwhile, is still in search for his next home but is likely to receive billion-dollar offers from various promotions for being the greatest fighter ever to grace the planet.
