The main event for UFC on FOX 30 has just come to an end, with UFC’s #4 ranked lightweight Dustin Poirier destroying the #3 Eddie Alvarez on the second round.
Their first fight at UFC 211 ended to a no-contest, but the fighters gave this bout a completely different ending.
Poirier earned his third consecutive win, bringing him closer to a title shot after a defeating Alvarez, who suffered only the third KO/TKO loss of his UFC career.
During the first round, both fighters were trading shots in the centre of the octagon. Their pace was consistent, with the men obviously respecting each other while trying to find their timing and range. They both finished the round strong, giving the judges a tough decision to make.
Poirer vs Alvarez 2
With just a few minutes on the second round, Poirier sank in a guillotine choke, but Alvarez grabbed the fence, causing him a warning. Poirier jumped another guillotine, but Alvarez was able to escape that one as well and then held the top position.
However, when Alvarez landed an illegal vertical elbow to Poirier’s collarbone, it cost him the position, and the referee asked both fighters to stand back up.
As the fight returned, Poirier went all out and threw everything to Alvarez, and eventually finishing the bout.

The Controversial 12-to-6 Elbow Rule
Alvarez was already on the verge of possibly winning the bout, but he missed the chance when he landed the 12-6 elbow strike which is illegal in MMA.
People had different reactions regarding the issue, with some of them sparking a backlash on the referee for stopping the fight.
Marc Goddard probably has a lot of haters now
Massive turning point in the fight was ref Marc Goddard standing them up as Eddie Alvarez was in mount and Goddard determined he was landing 12 to 6 elbows. Poirier seized control moments later.

Rules are rules
Fuckin ridiculous to stand Eddie up to warn him about 12-6. From that sort of dominant position. the message could have been conveyed without the stand up. The rules are never followed anyway.

18 years isn’t enough
UFC didn't ban 12-6 elbows last week y'all. Fighters have had 18 years to adjust. #UFCCalgary

Alvarez really has himself to blame. In a dominant position and brings himself undone with yet again another illegal strike. He’s been fighting long enough to know that was a blatant 12-6. Congrats to @DustinPoirier looked awesome out there #UFConFOX30

Referee Explains His Decision
Meanwhile, UFC Fighter Kamaru Usman expressed his opinion regarding the issue and mocked the referee. But luckily, Goddard knows what he’s doing.
The referee is #Savage
Mr Usman, I understand that emotion is a factor. Mr Alvarez held the fence, clawed the ear & then threw the 12-6 elbow that is why the positional advantage was taken away. As for your request, no problem that’s easily arranged. I wish you all the best in your career. Thank you. https://t.co/x3GoCEkLqi

And this guy wanted to show everyone why the 12-6 elbow is illegal.
I’ll just leave this here
